Unqualified Vs. Power 2
Anne played the role of a dedicated Puritan., daughter, and wife. She frequently expressed her state of mind about the male authorities in her life, such as God, her father, and her husband. She had mixed emotions towards the male role in Puritanism. On one hand, she valued their input and very much wanted their approval, and on another, she was angered by their denial of the value towards women’s experienced and abilities. In the dedication to her father in “The Tenth Muse” she plays as the obedient daughter. However, in “The Prologue”, she persists in her strategy of self-depreciation, describing her muse as “foolish, broken, blemished” in her effort to conceal ambition. In contrast to her weaknesses in these previous poems, her poem honoring the pleasant memories of Queen Elizabeth is the only poem that contains no apologies. She actually expresses her unworthy admiration for the queen as an exemplar of female prowess.
