Evaluating Information

Finding scholarly articles through Google

Google Scholar provides access to scholarly articles.  Unfortunately, some of the articles may not be available online.  You can ask for a copy of the article through the Jackson State Community College Interlibrary loan service at no charge.

Contact Vanessa Jones (vjones13@jscc.edu). Give her as much information about the article as possible. (author, title of journal, article title, date of issue, volume number)

It can take up to two weeks to get the article to you, so please allow enough time.

Using Search Terms to Find Information

It is important to write down all the words, ideas, etc. associated with your topic before beginning your search.

Each source that you use may use different terminology.

For example, if you were writing about the dangers of travel, you might write down:

travel and

danger or  war, or death, or violence

or

foreign travel and

danger or war or death or violence

or

visits and travel and danger

This is just one way to search.  There are many others.

You would come up with a variety of ways to approach the topic

Using the JSCC Library from Home

You can access electronic books, journal articles, and streaming media sources through the JSCC Library from off-campus by using the username and password that you have for getting into your online class.

Google Advanced Search

You can limit your search to a particular domain  (for example: gov or edu) by using this method:

travel benefits site:edu

or

gap year site:gov

or

travel culturally aware site:org
